What makes Beth’s approach to teaching writing different?
Two Words:
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING
As students engage in more complex writing tasks, more executive functioning (EF) is required. Unfortunately for students with ADHD or writing disabilities, their under-developed executive functions can impact their ability to get their thoughts onto paper efficiently and accurately.
For instance, they might totally know what a complex sentence is, but when they try to write one it comes out all mixed up. Or when they compare their answer to a model, they might not see the differences right away. Writing gets blamed because that’s what we see…meanwhile, EFs like working memory might actually be the real culprit.
Working Memory
One of many EFs that start in the prefrontal cortex (your brain’s CEO)
Used only while working, say on a math problem
Designed to organize info and dump it
Holds 3-4 new things at once, max
But how do you support executive functioning in writing?
Every brain is different, therefore every learner is different. However, there are a few go-to components Beth covers with almost every student.
Prewriting
Work smarter, not harder! There’s a reason their teacher gave them an outline, and, no, it’s not just to “make them write twice.” Thinking and writing are separate steps, and Beth will teach your child how to take notes, plan, and organize their thoughts before they put pen to paper.
Assistive
Technology
Sometimes we need support to work smarter, not harder. From learning to touch type to mastering free Google Docs tools, Beth can help your child find and master the tools that help them get those thoughts onto paper.
Communication
Beth is committed to ensuring that every member of the team knows how to help your student apply the skills they learn in our sessions. Using detailed notes and open lines of communication, Beth provides parents and teachers with everything they need to support students’ writing and executive functioning skills with confidence.

How do I
get started?
-
Schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation with Beth to learn more, answer any questions you have and generally assess if the class is a good fit for your child.
-
Yes, you’re in charge, but they’re the ones who have to show up. The idea of sitting down with a stranger and talking about what’s hard for you would intimidate most adults. The same is true for young people. Make sure they want to improve their writing skills before moving forward. Agency is everything.
-
Once you decide to move forward, Beth will send along links to everything you need to get started: policies, payment information, tech requirements, and a detailed online questionnaire for you to complete so she can get to know your child. You’ll share their interests, strengths, struggles… anything that can help Beth personalize her instructional materials and boost that just-for-them feeling.
