Get to know Beth

I’ve been in the thick of it for 25 years– as a public school classroom teacher, special education teacher, graduate school instructor, parent advocate, and administrator. When I say I’m a learning specialist, I truly mean it

My practice is dedicated to helping students use their strengths, own their struggles, and master their learning. Together we will conquer whatever stands in your child’s way and use it to propel them forward.

Beth is one of the most sought-after writing tutors for students with learning disabilities for good reason: she was trained by The Writing Revolution’s creator, Judy Hochman, and spent over a decade putting that knowledge to practice as a 5th and 6th-grade head teacher at Mary McDowell Friends School, one of New York City’s leading college preparatory programs for students with learning disabilities.

A seasoned curriculum developer, Beth holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Virginia Commonwealth University and taught differentiated curriculum design as a graduate school instructor at the Bank Street College of Education. She also designed and taught the Learning and the Brain course at Mary McDowell, teaching students with ADHD and learning disabilities all about their uniquely wired brains.

As an administrator, Beth served as Mary McDowell’s CSE Director, creating a first-of-its-kind in-house advocacy department responsible for communicating the learning needs and academic progress for hundreds of students in IEP meetings and impartial hearings. Translating special education jargon into “user-friendly” language is one of Beth’s passions, and the systems she created as CSE Director ensured everyone on a student’s learning team could access and understand what each student needed to be successful at school.

“I constantly seek out experiences that force me to learn and grow, even if I hate it. It builds empathy. I never forget that my students wake up and go to a place designed to be hard for them— every day, 180 days a year, by law. I strive to be half as brave as they are.”

In her private practice, Beth remains deeply committed to collaboration and transparent communication with every member of a student’s team, especially the student themselves. “Giving someone the language to get what they need is powerful stuff. When a student knows what they need and how to ask for it, they can truly do anything.”

A curious and lifelong student, Beth is the recipient of the Goethe-Institut’s Transatlantic Partnership Fellowship for history teachers and a former board member of Brick-by-Brick, a nonprofit dedicated to rebuilding schools in rural Uganda. She is also the winner of the IKEA Home Tour Series and a Moth StorySLAM winner.  In her spare time, Beth attempts to make her own clothes despite having almost no spatial reasoning. She currently resides in Brooklyn with her partner, Hugh, and their rescue pup, Jed Bartlet.
